CTRI–CEUMA Brazil Mangrove Research Partnership

Pilot Study Launch in São Luís, Brazil

The Community Translational Research Institute (CTRI) is pleased to share an update on our growing international research collaboration with Universidade CEUMA (CEUMA University), São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil.

As part of this partnership, the CTRI–CEUMA Mangrove Pilot Study will begin field data collection next week in two schools in São Luís—one located in a mangrove community and one in the urban center. This pilot phase represents an important step in understanding the intersection of environmental context, displacement experiences, and adolescent mental and behavioral health.

Pilot Study Components

The pilot data collection will include several validated research instruments designed to examine psychological, behavioral, and ecological determinants affecting adolescents:

  1. Structured Questionnaire

  • Displacement status

  • Depression and anxiety indicators

  • Negative urgency

  • Ecological and environmental circumstances

  1. PEARLS-BR (Pediatric ACEs and Related Life Events Screener – Brazil)

  • Assessment of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

  1. Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) – Adolescent Version

  • Measurement of impulsivity and behavioral regulation

  1. Iowa Gambling Task (IGT)

  • Assessment of decision-making and risk behavior

  1. Ecological Virtual Executive Test (fTEEV)

  • Evaluation of executive functioning in ecological contexts

Most instruments will be administered using Qualtrics, enabling rapid data capture and preliminary analysis. The Iowa Gambling Task and fTEEV will be administered through their specialized platforms.

Field Implementation

This work would not be possible without the dedication of our local field staff and research partners in São Luís, whose leadership and coordination are essential to the success of this pilot phase.

Looking Ahead

The data collected during this pilot will help refine measurement tools, assess feasibility in the field setting, and inform the next phase of the CTRI–CEUMA Mangrove Research Program.

We look forward to sharing updates, early insights, and a formal debrief with partners and collaborators as the study progresses.
